ers prefer patrons eat onsite rather than carry out, and the pleasant outdoor area centered
around a lovely garden courtyard and the remains of an old aqueduct makes that request
easy to accommodate. A second location (6a Avenida Norte #35 A, tel. 7832-1414) is only
open until 7 P.M. Monday-Saturday (until 6:30 P.M. Sun.).
STEAK HOUSES
Ni-Fu Ni-Fa (3a Calle Oriente #21, tel. 7832-6579, lunch and dinner daily) is a genuine
Argentinean steak house serving tasty grilled meats on a pleasant raised wooden deck sur-
rounded by lush gardens. Restaurant Las Antorchas (3a Avenida Sur #1, tel. 7832-0806,
www.lasantorchas.com , lunch and dinner daily) offers a more elegant setting and a menu
that includes grilled onions, cheese fondue, tortellini, salmon in orange sauce, and well-
presented grilled steak and chicken dishes.
MEXICAN
Just like its Guatemala City counterpart, Fridas (5a Avenida Norte #29, tel. 7832-0504,
www.vivafridas.com , lunch and dinner daily, $4-10) serves scrumptious Mexican classics
such as fajitas, flautas, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and nachos in addition to the best mar-
garitas and mojitos in town, all in a lively atmosphere.
EUROPEAN
La Escudilla (4a Avenida Norte #4, tel. 7832-1327, www.la-escudilla.com , 8 A.M.-mid-
night daily) is a restored colonial home with several dining options all under one roof
centeredaroundapleasantgardencourtyard.LaEscudillaRestauranthasavariedmenufor
breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including tasty omelets, tortillas de pollo (flour tortillas with
chicken), salads, steaks, pastas, and apple strudel for dessert. Housed in the same building
is Helas (6 P.M.-1 A.M. Tues.-Fri., 1 P.M.-1 A.M. Sat.-Sun.), a tavern serving authentic
Greek dishes in the $6-8 range. You can dine in a small but pleasant room decorated with
fishing nets and Aegean themes. Café Sky (corner of6a Calle Oriente and 1a Avenida Sur,
tel. 7832-7300, 8 A.M.-11 P.M. daily, $4-8) serves a variety of tasty menu items, including
sandwiches, lasagnas, and quesadillas. There are wonderful volcano views from the res-
taurant's rooftop terrace location.
For French food, La Casserole (Callejón de la Concepción #7, tel. 7832-0219, noon-3
P.M. and 7-10 P.M. Tues.-Sat., noon-4 P.M. Sun.) is hard to beat. In an appealing garden
patio with a dozen or so tables, there are tasty soups, well-prepared pastas, and fish and
