In-Depth Information
The nationalistic exterior and brightly colored flowers make finding the Drunken Goat
Taverna (950 2nd Ave., 867/993-5868, noon-9pm daily, $21-30) easy. Inside, you'll find a
slightly overpriced menu of Greek specialties, but this far north, all is forgiven. The adja-
cent Billy Goat's Pub (952 2nd Ave., 867/993-6989, 4pm-midnight) shares the same kit-
chen and menu and is one of the best places in town to combine food and drink.
INFORMATION AND SERVICES
Across the road from the Yukon River, Dawson City Visitor Information Centre (Front
St. and King St., 867/993-5274, 10am-6pm daily early May-late Sept. extended to 8am-8pm
daily July-Aug.) is extremely well organized and prepared for the most common questions
from the hordes of hopefuls that are, after all, Dawson's legacy.
Right by the visitor center, Tasty Byte (1076 Front St., 867/993-6100, 9am-5pm Mon.-
Sat.) has free wireless connections for the price of a coffee, or pay a small fee to use their
terminals. Tasty Byte is closed Sunday and, according to the sign on the door, “whenever
the temperature drops below minus 40.”
Dawson City Community Library (corner Fifth Ave. and Queen St., 867/993-5571,
noon-6:30pm Mon.-Fri.) is in the same building as the local public school. Maximilian's
Gold Rush Emporium (Front St., 867/993-5486) has a great selection of northern literat-
ure. One of the most unique souvenirs you can get in Dawson is an authentic placer map
showing all the gold fields and claims. They are available along with topo maps at the
Dawson Mining Recorder (5th Ave. between Queen St. and Princess St., 867/993-5343).
