overnight parking for RVs. The complex also has a rustic log dining room, a lounge, public
Internet access, and gas (which will be cheaper on the U.S. side of the border).
Beaver Creek Visitor Information Centre (867/862-7321, 10am-6pm daily June-mid-
Sept., extended to 8am-8pm daily in July-Aug.) is operated by the Yukon government as an
information resource for travelers entering the territory from Alaska.
Onward to Alaska
The Canada-U.S. border is 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of Beaver Creek and the U.S.
Customs post is another one kilometer (0.6 miles) west. Heading into Alaska, be sure to
turn your watches back one hour to Alaska Standard Time. Traveling in the opposite direc-
tion, Canadian Customs is well inside Canada, just three kilometers (1.9 miles) northwest
of Beaver Creek. Both posts are open 24 hours a day year-round, and you'll need a passport
regardless of your citizenship or which direction you're headed.
If you're reading this before leaving home, begin planning your Alaska travels by vis-
iting the official website of Alaska Tourism ( www.travelalaska.com ). The best guidebook
out there is Moon Alaska . In Whitehorse, you'll find copies at Mac's Fireweed Books (203
Main St., 867/668-6104, 8am-9pm daily).
Whitehorse to Dawson City
It's 536 kilometers (333 miles) north from Whitehorse to Dawson City along Highway 2
(Klondike Highway). Allow six or seven hours nonstop driving, or stretch the trip out to a
full day or two by stopping at the places detailed below.
LAKE LABERGE
Lake Laberge, 62 kilometers (38.5 miles) from Whitehorse, is famous primarily as the
site of the burning of the corpse in Robert Service's immortal poem “Cremation of Sam
McGee.” The excellent trout fishing here has also been well-known since stampeder days,
when the fish were barged to Dawson by the ton. You get glimpses of the lake from High-
way 2, but if you take Deep Creek Road three kilometers (1.9 miles) to the lakeshore, the
views are much improved. Right on the lake is Lake Laberge Campground (mid-June-
Aug., $12), with limited services but a priceless location.
