TO FORT NELSON
The 374-kilometer (232-mile) stretch of the Alaska Highway between Fort St. John and
Fort Nelson passes through boreal forest and a landscape that becomes more and more
mountainous. It also provides one of your best chances of spotting wildlife, especially if
you travel in the cool of the early morning. Species you may spy are moose, grizzly and
black bears, deer, elk, and bison.
From Wonowon, the highway climbs steadily to Pink Mountain, at Mile 147. Numer-
ous services perch on the low summit, where snow can fall year-round. On the west side of
the highway, Pink Mountain Campsite (250/772-5133) provides tent and RV sites for $22
(power hookups). Showers are an extra $3.
