around veranda faces the ocean out front. Gourmet meals are served in an elegant

FOOD
Downtown
Most of Rupert's larger motels have restaurants, but the place to head for substantial
and inexpensive breakfasts is the Moby Dick Inn (935 2nd Ave. W., 250/624-6961,
6:30am-9:30pm daily, dinner mains $12-21). You can order anything from a bowl of fruit
and a muffin to eggs, bacon, and toast or steak and eggs. It's always crowded, and service
can be slow. Just around the corner, the Raffles Inn (1080 3rd Ave. W., 250/624-9161) of-
fers similar fare and is open similar hours.
At street level of a historical downtown bank building that operates as Java Lodge is
Java Bistro (516 3rd Ave. W, 250/622-2822, 7am-6pm Mon.-Thurs., 7am-9pm Fri.-Sat.,
lunches $7-11), with excellent coffee and a tasty selection of Asian-inspired lunch and din-
ner dishes.
Combining water views, good food, and pleasant surroundings, the Waterfront Res-
taurant (Crest Hotel, 222 1st Ave. W., 250/624-6771, 6:30am-9pm Mon.-Fri., 7am-9pm
Sat.-Sun, $17-40) is as upscale as it gets in Prince Rupert. You could start with alder-
smoked steelhead and then move on to oven-roasted rack of lamb with a balsamic red grape
reduction.
Cow Bay
East of downtown is Cow Bay, originally a fishy-smelling, rough-and-tumble part of town
home to a large fishing fleet. The boats are still there, moored in a marina, and a few old
buildings still stand. But for the most part, the bay is a changed place. Rowdy dives have
been replaced by trendy art and crafts shops and an excellent choice of cafes and seafood
restaurants.
Cowpuccino's (25 Cow Bay Rd., 250/627-1395, 7:30am-10pm daily) is a busy little
café with freshly brewed coffee, magnificent muffins, delicious desserts, newspapers and
magazines to read, and a laid-back atmosphere. Across the way and right on the harbor is
Cow Bay Cafe (205 Cow Bay Rd., 250/627-1212, 11am-8pm Tues.-Sun., lunches $8-14),
where you can sit at an outside table and take in the smells of the ocean, or stay inside and
enjoy the greenery. Good home-cooked meals, including vegetarian dishes, and daily spe-
cials start at $8.
