Camping
Like the rest of Rupert's accommodations, Park Avenue Campground (1750 Park Ave.,
250/627-1000, www.princerupertrv.com , $21-37) fills and empties on a daily basis with the
arrival and departure of the ferries. If you know when you're arriving in the city, phone
ahead to avoid any hassles. The campground is a one-kilometer (0.6-mile) hike from both
the city center and ferry terminals. Facilities include hot showers, cooking shelters, raised
tent pads, a mail drop, and visitor information. The other alternative is Prudhomme Lake
Provincial Park ($16), along the Yellowhead Highway 16 kilometers (10 miles) east of
downtown, where there are limited facilities and reservations are not taken.
KING PACIFIC LODGE
Part of the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts group, King Pacific Lodge (604/987-5452

for three nights) provides an unforgettable wilderness experience, far removed from
what the casual highway traveler might encounter. The floating lodge is on remote
Princess Royal Island, best known for its population of Kermode, the albino-like
“Spirit Bear.” Its three-story timber structure is built over the waters of a protected
cove, the perfect base for searching out abundant marine mammals, kayaking, wild-
life viewing, and fishing. It is this last activity that attracts most guests, with chinooks
(kings) biting best May-July and peak season for other salmon August-September.
The minimum stay is three nights, with all packages including floatplane trans-
portation from Prince Rupert, all meals and drinks, and all activities. The lodge itself
holds 17 spacious guest rooms, each with ample amenities and luxurious furnishings.
