$13-19) is a local's favorite for Persian dishes such as
fesenjoon,
a slow-cooked chicken
stew that uses a pomegranate paste as a base and is served on a bed of rice and topped with
crushed walnuts.
With its thoughtful menu and casually elegant heritage-themed setting,
M
Twisted Cork
(1157 5th Ave., 250/561-5550, 11am-9pm Mon.-Sat., 5pm-9pm Sun., $22-36) stands out as
the restaurant of choice for a nice night out in Prince George. The setting is a big, old stone-
and-brick building, with lots of exposed beams and polished wood throughout. Lunches
(mostly under $15) provide good value, but it is the main menu that is most notable, with
dinner entrées such as walleye pan-fried in a tomato butter sauce making this restaurant a
standout. I'm not usually a fan of brownies, but the Twisted Cork version, covered with
warm vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, was delectable.
Similar in style to Twisted Cork, but with a more romantic setting, is
White Goose Bis-
tro
(1205 3rd Ave., 250/561-1002, 11am-2pm and 5pm-9pm Mon.-Sat., $18-36), which is
as close to fine dining as you'll find this far north. The menu is creative (think ostrich steak
grilled with a pesto rub), the setting stylish, and the presentation excellent.
