The highlight of the large Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin (113 4th Ave. N., 250/
392-7404, 10am-4pm Mon.-Sat. in summer, 11am-4pm Tues.-Sat. the rest of the year, adult
$2) is the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame and associated rodeo, ranching, and Stampede dis-
plays. Other exhibits include historical photos, remains of the Chinese settlement at Ques-
nel Forks, and all kinds of picks, pans, and axes from gold-mining days. Station House
Gallery (1 Mackenzie Ave. N., 250/392-6113, 10am-5pm Mon.-Sat., free), in the original
railway station, displays an excellent collection of western-themed art.
On the eastern outskirts of the city, Scout Island Nature Centre (250/398-8532,
9am-4pm Mon.-Fri., 1pm-4pm Sun. May-mid-Sept., free) is surrounded by wetlands that
serve as a staging area for migratory waterfowl. Colorful displays inside the center catalog
the surrounding ecosystem, but the idea is to get out into the wetlands. Wander along one
of the short hiking trails or climb the observation tower for a bird's-eye view of the wild
landscape.
