In-Depth Information
The town is also home to the unique nine-hole Lillooet Sheep Pasture Golf Course
(Texas Creek Rd. eight kilometers/5 miles southwest of town, 250/256-0550, Apr.-Oct.,
$20), best known for a herd of sheep that keep the grass fairways in good condition.
Accommodations and Camping
One block up the hill from the museum, 4 Pines Motel (108 8th Ave., 250/256-4247 or 800/
753-2576, www.4pinesmotel.com ) has older rooms ($80 s or d) and a newer wing ($100 s or
d), all of which are air-conditioned. Cayoosh Creek Campground (no reservations taken,
mid-May-Sept., $20-30) is a treed spot near the south end of town, where Cayoosh Creek
drains into the much larger Fraser River. Facilities include hot showers and full hookups.
CLINTON TO 100 MILE HOUSE
Clinton
The old-fashioned town of Clinton lies 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Cache Creek on
Highway 97. Clinton Museum (Hwy. 97, 250/459-2442, 10am-6pm Mon.-Fri. in sum-
mer, donation) occupies an old schoolhouse made of handmade bricks fired locally in the
1890s. The museum contains pioneer belongings, guns, historical photos, First Nations and
Chinese artifacts, freight wagons, and all sorts of items from the Gold-Rush days. A nearby
natural attraction worth seeing is Painted Chasm, in Chasm Provincial Park, 16 kilomet-
ers (10 miles) north of town, then four kilometers (2.5 miles) east. During the last ice age,
glacial meltwater carved a 300-meter-deep (984-foot-deep) box canyon here out of mineral-
laden volcanic bedrock. It's quite a spectacle when the sunlight brings out the sparkling
reds, yellows, and purples of the minerals. An old road leads along the top of the canyon,
which provides the best vantage points.
The huge log structure on the main street is Cariboo Lodge Resort (250/459-7992,
www.cariboolodgebc.com , $79 s, $84 d). Although the 20 guest rooms are motel-like, rates
are reasonable and a downstairs café and western-style saloon mean you don't have to leave
the building after checking in.
North to 100 Mile House
Back on the main highway, between 70 Mile House and 100 Mile House, are several
turnoffs leading to hundreds of lakes, big and small. All information centers in Cariboo
Country stock the invaluable Cariboo-Chilcotin Fishing Guide. Updated annually, the
booklet features essential fishing information (where, when, and with what) for many of the
lakes, plus maps, camping spots, and even recipes for the ones that didn't get away.
