M Emerald Lake Lodge (250/343-6321 or 800/663-6336, www.crmr.com , from $345 s or
d) is a gracious, luxury-class accommodation along the southern shore of one of the Canadi-
an Rockies' most magnificent lakes. The original lodge was built in 1902 in the same tradi-
tion as the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Banff Springs—as a playground for
wealthy railway travelers. No original buildings remain (although the original framework
is used in the main building); instead, guests lap up the luxury of richly decorated duplex-
style units and freestanding cabins. Each spacious unit is outfitted in a heritage theme and
has a wood-burning fireplace, private balcony, luxurious bathroom, comfortable bed topped
by a plush duvet, and in-room coffee. Other lodge amenities include a hot tub and sauna,
swimming pool, restaurant, lounge, and café. Guests can also go horseback riding or boat-
ing and fishing on Emerald Lake.
Comprising upscale cabins set alongside the Kicking Horse River, M Cathedral Moun-
tain Lodge (250/343-6442 or 866/619-6442, www.cathedralmountain.com , mid-May-
Sept., $289-389 s or d) lies one kilometer (0.6 mile) along Yoho Valley Road from the
Trans-Canada Highway. In recent years, the original cabins have been replaced by fancy log
chalets, with modern amenities and plenty of space to spread out. Each has a log bed topped
by a down duvet, stone fireplace, bathroom with soaker tub and bathrobes, and private deck.
Rates include a continental breakfast and naturalist program. Within a magnificent timber-
frame building in the center of the complex is a stylish restaurant and lounge.
Spending a night at M Lake O'Hara Lodge (250/343-6418, www.lakeohara.com , mid-
June-early Oct., two night minimum) is a special experience, and one that draws familiar
faces year after year. On a practical level, it allows hikers not equipped for overnight camp-
ing the opportunity to explore one of the finest hiking destinations in all of the Canadi-
an Rockies at their leisure. The 15 one-bedroom cabins, each with a private bathroom, are
spread around the lakeshore, while within the main lodge are eight rooms, most of which
are twins and share bathrooms. Rates of $490 s, $635 d for a room in the main lodge (shared
bathrooms) and $895-915 per couple for a cabin include all meals, taxes, gratuities, and
transportation. As the lodge is located 13 kilometers (eight miles) from Highway 1, guests
arrive by a shuttle bus that departs from a parking lot three kilometers (1.9 miles) west of
the Continental Divide and 15 kilometers (nine miles) east of Field. Between February and
April, the eight rooms in the main lodge are available for cross-country skiers for $337.50
per person, inclusive of meals and ski tours.
