Thirty kilometers (18.6 miles) northeast of Fernie, Sparwood (pop. 4,200) is a small coal-
mining community (the coal seams and part of the mining operations can be seen on the
ridge high above town), but a more eye-catching element of the local industry is the world's
largest truck, which sits beside Highway 3 in the center of town. Beside the truck is
Sparwood Visitor Centre (250/425-2423 or 877/485-8185, www.sparwood.ca , 9am-8pm
Mon.-Fri. and 9am-5pm Sat.-Sun. July-early Sept., 9am-5pm Mon.-Fri. the rest of the year),
where you can arrange a tour of the mines (1pm Tues., Wed., and Thurs. July-Aug., free).
Those looking for a roof over their head should plan on staying down the road in Fernie,
while campers will enjoy full services and the forested setting at Mountain Shadows
Campground (606 Sparwood Dr., 250/425-7815, www.mountainshadows.ca , May-Oct.,
$20-30) signposted from Highway 93 south of town.
