In-Depth Information
The grandest of Kelowna's accommodations is the
Delta Grand Okanagan Resort
(1310 Water St., 250/763-4500 or 800/465-4651,
www.deltahotels.com
,
from $299 s or d),
a sprawling lakeside development right downtown and integrated with parkland and walk-
ing paths. Along the lake side of the resort are restaurants with lots of outdoor seating and
a lagoon with its own private lock and watercraft rentals. Inside, once past the cavernous
lobby, you'll find a fitness center, spa services, restaurants, a lounge bar, and 390 luxuri-
ously appointed rooms.
Camping
The closest campground to downtown is
Hiawatha RV Park
(3787 Lakeshore Rd., 250/
861-4837 or 888/784-7275,
www.hiawatharvpark.com
,
March-Oct., tent sites $50, hookups
$57-64). It has a an outdoor pool, a tenting area, showers, a laundry, a game room, and a
playground.
Two provincial parks in the vicinity of Kelowna offer camping with hot showers, but
to ensure a site you should make reservations through Discover Camping (519/826-6850
or 800/689-9025,
www.discovercamping.ca
). The closest is
Bear Creek Provincial Park
(late March-mid-Oct., $30) across the bridge from downtown and then nine kilometers (5.6
miles) north on Westside Road. The campground holds 122 sites nestled under cottonwood
trees. Campers also enjoy a short beach and trails that cross back over Westside Road and
into desertlike terrain above the lake.
Fintry Provincial Park
(April-mid-Oct., $30) lies a
23 kilometers (14.3 miles) farther north along Westside Road in the same beachside setting
as Bear Creek, although the campground is less developed. A trail leads from the camp-
ground to a deep canyon along Shorts Creek.
Although most hotels and resorts have in-house restaurants, it's worth venturing downtown
to try one of the recommendations below, unless you're staying at the Hotel Eldorado,
where outdoor dining at the lakefront
Boardwalk
(500 Cook Rd., 250/763-7500, lunch and
dinner daily May-Sept., $12-21) is a great option for dinner on a warm night.
Cafés
Bohemian Café
(524 Bernard Ave., 250/862-3517, 7:30am-3pm Wed.-Fri., 8:30am-3pm
Sat., 8:30am-2pm Sun., lunches $5.50-9) has a loyal local following for gourmet coffee,
bagels baked in-house, and inexpensive cooked breakfasts. On my last research trip, locals
pointed me to
Giobean
(Delta Grand, 1320 Water St., 250/868-2992, 7am-5pm Tues.-Sat.,
