SIGHTS
The emphasis in Penticton is on sun and sand, but there's also a little history to explore at
Penticton Museum (785 Main St., 250/490-2454, 10am-5pm Tues.-Sat., donation).
Wander along the tree-shaded shores of Lake Okanagan to see the SS Sicamous (1099
Lakeshore Dr. W., 250/492-0403, 10am-4pm daily extended to 7am-7pm in summer,
noon-4pm Thurs.-Sun. the rest of the year, adult $6, senior $4.50, child $3.50). This Cana-
dian Pacific Railway sternwheeler operated on Lake Okanagan from 1914 to 1936. Now it
rests on the lakeshore, and it's easy to spend an hour wandering through the ship, peeking
into the purser's office, admiring the furnishings in the grand dining room, and clambering
up to the observation deck.
At the opposite end of Lakeshore Drive (to the east) is Penticton Art Gallery (199 Mar-
ina Way, 250/493-2928, 10am-5pm Tues.-Fri., noon-5pm Sat.-Sun., adult $2, free on week-
ends). The craft shop is a good place to pick up creative treasures and handmade souvenirs.
Continue east from the gallery to the local marina —another enjoyable spot for a lakeside
stroll.
