In-Depth Information
Penticton
One of the Okanagan's three major population centers, Penticton (pop. 32,000) lies between
the north end of Skaha Lake and the south end of Okanagan Lake. Approaching from the
south, you'll see a roadside plaque honoring pioneer Thomas Ellis, who arrived in the val-
ley in 1886, built a great cattle empire, and planted the area's first orchard. Today fruit orch-
ards are everywhere, and Penticton's nickname is Peach City.
MM NARAMATA WINERIES
Like many other rural routes through the Okanagan, Naramata Road, running northeast
from Penticton for 14 kilometers (8.7 miles), passes row after row of grape vines grown
by 24 well-respected wineries. The bonus to visiting this concentration of vineyards are the
stunning views across Okanagan Lake to the mountains beyond, making tours, tastings, and
outdoor lunches extra enjoyable.
