Mount Kobau and Vicinity
For a bird's-eye view of the lake, take Highway 3 west from town 12 kilometers (7.5 miles),
then follow a 20-kilometer (12-mile) gravel road to the 1,874-meter (6,150-foot) summit of
Mount Kobau. Short trails there lead to viewpoints of the Similkameen and Okanagan Val-
leys. Along the section of Highway 3 before the turnoff, watch for Spotted Lake, a bizarre
natural phenomenon on the south side of the road. As summer progresses and the lake's wa-
ter evaporates, high concentrations of magnesium, calcium, and sodium crystallize, forming
colorful circles.
