and a kayak- and boat-launching ramp, but it's a great spot to camp if you're into canoeing
or kayaking.
Accommodations
The only accommodation right in town is the Historic Lund Hotel (604/414-0474 or 877/
569-3999, www.lundhotel.com , $130-195 s or d), which sits right on the harbor. The histor-
ic charm of the original guest rooms has been replaced by contemporary styling and hand-
painted murals. The hotel complex holds a pub, restaurant, kayak rental shop, laundry, post
office, art gallery, and grocery store.
If you're looking for something a little different, choose to stay at M The Dome (off
Baggi Rd., 604/483-9160, www.magicaldome.com , $150 s or d, minimum three nights), a
five-minute drive from Lund. As far as I know, it's the only place in Canada where you
can stay in a geodesic dome—a quirky architectural style that employs dozens of triangular
panels to form a rigid spherical structure that creates the most space with the least amount
of materials. Inside is a bedroom, loft with second bed, well-equipped kitchen, lounge area,
and wood-burning fireplace. Adjacent is a modern bathhouse, complete with sauna, as well
as an additional bunkhouse that sleeps five.
Set on three hectares (7.4 acres) overlooking Okeover Arm, M Desolation Resort (2694
Dawson Rd., 604/483-3592 or 800/399-3592, www.desolationresort.com , from $169 s or
d) offers a wonderful escape at reasonable prices. Accommodation is in freestanding wood
chalets set high above the water edge on stilts. All feature rich-colored wood furnishings,
and even the smallest (the bottom half of one unit) has a king-size bed, a large deck, a kit-
chen, separate living and dining areas, and a barbecue. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are
practically right out your door at the private marina.
Food
In addition to a fine choice of accommodations, Lund and area is home to a couple of the
Sunshine Coast's premier restaurants. The food at Historic Lund Hotel (604/414-0474,
11:30am-9pm daily, $12-28) is overshadowed by the views, especially if you talk your way
to an outside table. Crab cakes topped with crab salad are a good starter, followed by sea-
food fettuccine as a main and a slab of mud cake for dessert. Choose this combo and you'll
pay around $40—about the same as a main meal in Vancouver.
The upscale M Laughing Oyster (10052 Malaspina Rd., 604/483-9775, noon-8:30pm
daily, $19.50-31) is a hidden gem. In this restaurant overlooking the water from an elevated
setting, diners are seated outside on a deck or inside on tiers that allow everyone to enjoy
the view. Starters include oysters prepared in a variety of ways (you can see the restaurant's
