Hiking
While most visitors to Powell River spend their time enjoying water-oriented sports, the
hiking around town is also good—and chances are you'll have the trails to yourself.
From Powell River's municipal campground, the 1.2-kilometer (0.7-mile) Willingdon
Beach Trail runs north past interpretive boards describing natural features and the uses of
old logging machinery scattered along the trail, which ends at a viewpoint overlooking his-
toric Townsite and the pulp operations. One of the most popular short local trails is the
1-kilometer (0.6-mile) hike up Mount Valentine, north of Cranberry. The trail leads to a
stunning panoramic view of Malaspina Strait and the Strait of Georgia. Access it from the
end of Crown Avenue: Take Manson Avenue east to Cranberry Street, turn left, then turn
right on Crown.
Canoeing and Kayaking
The sheltered Sunshine Coast provides plenty of opportunities for good lake and ocean ca-
noeing or kayaking. The most popular canoe trip is the Powell Forest Canoe Route, while
kayakers find solitude in Desolation Sound.
