In-Depth Information
Sitka spruce to 23 kilometers (14.3 miles) of beautiful sandy beaches and rocky promontor-
ies and headlands.
The classic park hike to Cape Scott Lighthouse (23 kilometers/14.3 miles; about eight
or nine hours each way) is relatively level, but you'll need stout footwear. A shorter altern-
ative is the trail to beautiful San Josef Bay at the southern boundary of the park (2.5 kilo-
meters/1.6 miles; 45 minutes each way), which has a sandy stretch of beach.
Practicalities
Needless to say, services and facilities within the park are extremely limited. To get to the
park boundary, you have to follow 67 kilometers (42 miles) of logging roads leading west
from Port Hardy through the logging town of Holberg. Near the end of the road is San Josef
River Recreation Site ($8 per night for a primitive campsite). You can also camp on one
of the pads at Eric Lake, a short distance along the trail to Cape Scott, or on any park beach,
for $10 per person per night.
