Campbell Way leads down off the highway to the waterfront, and along this road you'll

MALCOLM ISLAND
This largish island, immediately offshore from Port McNeill, is home to around 600 people,
most of whom live in the village of Sointula. The first European settlers, of Finnish des-
cent, had been toiling in the coal mines of Nanaimo. Meaning “harmony” in Finnish, Soin-
tula evolved as a utopian community in which everyone shared everything and everyone
was equal. In town, wander along the residential streets and admire the trim homes and
well-tended gardens, then visit Sointula Museum (280 1st St., 11am-3pm daily in summer,
donation), in a renovated school building three blocks north of the ferry dock. Then walk
the three-kilometer (1.9-mile) Mateoja Heritage Trail from the north end of 3rd Street to a
