In-Depth Information
Camping
A few commercial campgrounds dot the coastline around Campbell River, but although
they're close to the water, the surroundings are generally nothing special. One of the closest
to downtown is Thunderbird RV Park (2660 Spit Rd., 250/286-3344, tents $21, hook-
ups $31-35), a 10-minute walk north of downtown. Amenities include full hookups, heated
washrooms, inexpensive Internet access, and fish-cleaning stations.
A less commercial option, but with limited facilities, is Elk Falls Provincial Park (519/
826-6850 or 800/689-9025, www.discovercamping.ca , May-mid-Oct., $16), three kilomet-
ers (1.9 miles) west of town on Highway 28.
Food
The best place to go for coffee downtown is Nesbitt's Island Coffee (1140 Shoppers
Row, 250/287-4887, 8am-8pm daily, lunches $7-11), which also serves up good coffee and
muffins, as well as sandwiches, soups, and salads. Online Gourmet (970 Shoppers Row,
250/286-6521, 8am-4pm Mon.-Sat., lunches $6-10) is part Internet cafe but mostly an ex-
cellent place for lunch, with soup made in-house and sandwiches and wraps made to order.
Continue north through town on Highway 19 and turn right on McDonald Road to
reach two fishing resorts with excellent restaurants that welcome nonguests. The appetizer
menu at Legends Dining Room (Painter's Lodge, 1625 MacDonald Dr., 250/286-1102,
5am-11am and 5pm-9pm daily, $22-30) is dominated by seafood choices, and while mains
include steak and lamb, it's hard to go past the halibut, cooked two different ways.

Fri. the rest of the year).
Getting There and Around

allow over three hours for the trip by road, and at least another three hours to reach Port
Hardy, 235 kilometers (146 miles) further to the north. Campbell River Airport, off Erick-
son Road 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of downtown, is served by Pacific Coastal (800/
663-2872) and Central Mountain Air (888/865-8585) from Vancouver. Campbell River
