Fishing
Salmon fishing is the point of traveling to Campbell River for most visitors. The best thing
about angling in the waters of adjacent Discovery Passage is that it can be enjoyed by all
ages and on all budgets—and without a long boat ride through rough waters to reach the
best spots. All five species of Pacific salmon are caught in local waters, including chinook
(July-Sept.), pink (mid-July-Sept.), coho (July-Oct.), sockeye (mid-July-Aug.), and chum
(mid-Sept.-Nov.).
The marinas along this stretch of coast are filled with charter operators, but one that
comes highly recommended is Coastal Island Fishing Adventures (250/287-3836 or 888/
225-9776, www.coastalislandfishing.com ) , which charges $600-700 for a five-hour fishing
trip for up to five people. Rates include transportation in a covered boat and fish cleaning
and packaging.
Accommodations
Along Highway 19A (known as the South Island Highway through Campbell River)
south of town, only the road separates several motels from Discovery Passage, including
the 22-room Big Rock Motel (1020 S. Island Hwy., 250/923-4211 or 877/923-4211,
www.bigrockmotel.com , $75 s or d, $100 with a kitchen), your average two-story cinder-
block motel. Along the same strip of accommodations is Heron's Landing Hotel (492 S.
Island Hwy., 250/923-2848 or 888/923-2849, www.heronslandinghotel.com , $139-179 s or
d), an older property that has undergone extensive renovations to create some of the nicest
guest rooms in Campbell River.
