stop at Sechart before returning to Port Alberni. In July and August, an additional
Sunday sailing departs Port Alberni at 8am, stopping at Sechart and returning dir-
ectly to Port Alberni. The one-way fare between Port Alberni and Sechart is $35;
between Ucluelet and Sechart, it's $26.
The company that operates the boat also rents kayaks ($45-60 per day), which are
left at Sechart so you don't have to pay a transportation charge. If you bring your
own kayak, the transportation charge is $20-25 each way. The trip out on this boat
is worthwhile just for the scenery, with the Ucluelet sailing passing right through the
heart of the archipelago.
One of the province's most remote communities, this tiny fishing village lies along both
sides of a narrow inlet on Barkley Sound. Most people arrive here aboard the MV
Frances

from Port Alberni, but the town is also linked to Port Alberni by a rough
100-kilometer (62-mile) logging road. It's well worth the trip out to go fishing, explore the
seashore, or just soak up the atmosphere of this picturesque boardwalk village. Bamfield is
also the northern terminus of the
West Coast Trail.

set among trees and overlooking the water. Sleeping up to five people, each has a kitchen
and barbeque. Rates include boat transfers from across the channel. The lodge owners also
operate a waterfront restaurant and a charter boat for fishing and wilderness trips.
Highway 4 west from Port Alberni meanders through unspoiled mountain wilderness, and
you won't find a gas station or store for at least a couple of hours. Ninety-one kilomet-
ers (56.5 miles) from Port Alberni, Highway 4 splits, leading eight kilometers (five miles)
south to Ucluelet or 34 kilometers (21 miles) north through Pacific Rim National Park to
Tofino.
