houses, a logging operation, and a small recreation area. The recreation area lies on a point
at the mouth of the Jordan River. It's not the best camping spot you'll ever come across, but
no signs prohibit overnight stays; surfers often spend the night here, waiting for the swells
to rise and the long right-handed waves known as Jordans to crank up.
Juan de Fuca Provincial Park
This 1,277-hectare (3,156-acre) coastal park extends from Jordan River to Port Renfrew,
but one of the easiest access points is just west of Jordan River, where a 700-meter
(0.4-mile) one-way trail leads through Sitka spruce to China Beach, which is strewn with
driftwood and backed by a couple of protected picnic sites. Camping (back up by the
highway) is $16 per night; make reservations through Discover Camping (519/826-6850
or 800/689-9025, www.discovercamping.ca ). China Beach is also the beginning of the
47-kilometer (29-mile) Juan de Fuca Trail, a coastal hiking route that ends at Botanical
Beach.
