Look for restaurants throughout Chinatown.
Noodle Box
(626 Fisgard St., 250/360-1312, 11am-9pm Mon.-Fri., noon-9pm Sat.-Sun.,
$8.50-14) started out as a street stall and now has multiple locations, including along Fis-
gard Street near the entrance to Chinatown. The concept is simpleāan inexpensive noodle
bar, serving up fare similar to what you'd find on the streets of Southeast Asia.
One of Victoria's best Thai restaurants is
Sookjai Thai
(893 Fort St., 250/383-9945,
11:30am-9:30pm Mon.-Thurs., 11:30am-1:30pm Fri.-Sat., $11-19). The tranquil setting is
the perfect place to sample traditional delights such as
tom yum goong
(a prawn and mush-
room soup with a hint of tangy citrus), and baked red snapper sprinkled with spices sourced
from Thailand. The snapper is the most expensive main, with several inspiring vegetarian
choices around $10.
Step into the world of British colonialism at the
M
Bengal Lounge
(721 Government
St., 250/389-2727), in the Fairmont Empress. The curry lunch buffet (11:30am-2pm daily,
$30) and curry dinner buffet (6pm-9pm daily, $32) come with the three condiments I love
to have with curry: shaved coconut, mango chutney, and mixed nuts.
