BEACON HILL PARK
This large, hilly city park—a lush, sea-edged oasis of grass and flowers—extends from the
back of the Royal BC Museum along Douglas Street out to cliffs that offer spectacular
views of Juan de Fuca Strait and, on a clear day, the distant Olympic Mountains. Add a
handful of rocky points to scramble on and many protected pebble-and-sand beaches and
you've found yourself a perfect spot to indulge your senses. Catch a sea breeze and gaze
at all the strolling, cycling, dog-walking, and pram-pushing Victorians passing by. On a
bright, sunny day you'll swear that most of Victoria is here, too. The park is within easy
walking distance from downtown and can also be reached by bus 5. For a tidbit of history,
walk through the park to rocky Finlayson Point, once the site of an ancient fortified First
Nations village. Between 1878 and 1892, two enormous guns protected the point against an
expected but unrealized Russian invasion.
Rockland
This historical part of downtown lies behind the Inner Harbour, east of Douglas Street, and
is easily accessible on foot.
