In-Depth Information
the high levels of production needed for modern agriculture. AM and GS
methodologies have the potential to reveal the value of landraces and
exotic germplasm, which will accelerate breeding in many crop species,
perhaps diversifying the monoculture agriculture of today. Knowledge
of the methodologies used and introduction to the concepts of associa-
tion genetics has been the goal of this chapter and we hope that
researchers will use this information to start research with tropical
and subtropical germplasm and crop species. Association genetics
has been de
nitively added to the toolbox of strategies that geneticist
and plant breeders can use to understand the world
is crops. It is up to
various actors to determine how best to use these tools for sustainable
agriculture in developing countries.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors would like to thank Drs. Rodomiro Ortiz and Mitchell R.
Tuinstra for useful commentaries and Dr. Mathias Lorieux (IRD) for
useful discussions. Funding from the National University of Colombia
and various donors (IRDC and Max Planck) in Canada and Germany is
recognized. This chapter grew from a doctoral thesis in the university of
the
