Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation operates three 18-hole courses on the south
side of the city: McCleery Golf Course (7188 McDonald St., Southlands, 604/257-8191)
has a flat, relatively easy layout with wide fairways; rebuilt in the late 1990s, Fraserview
Golf Course (7800 Vivian Dr., Fraserview, 604/257-6923) winds its way through a well-
established forest; and Langara Golf Course (6706 Alberta St. off Cambie St., South
Cambie, 604/713-1816) is the most challenging of the three. Each course offers club rent-
als, carts, and lessons, and all but Langara have driving ranges. Greens fees at all three
courses are $57 during the week and $63 on weekends. Make bookings up to five days in
advance by calling 604/280-1818, or call the courses directly on the day you want to play.
Watercomesintoplayon13holesofthe Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club (5460
No.7Rd.,Richmond,604/276-0505),buttheuniquefeatureisthesalmon,whichspawnin
Mayfair's waterways. This course plays host to a stop on the Canadian Professional Tour
each June but is open to the public the rest of the year, playing a challenging 6,641 yards
from the back markers. Greens fees are $79, with twilight and off-season rates discounted
as low as $39.
Formerly a private club, Gleneagles Golf Course (6190 Marine Dr., West Vancouver,
604/921-7353), on the North Shore, has a sloping nine-hole layout with ocean views.
Bookings can be made online at www.westvancouver.ca and greens fees for nine holes are
just $32.
FarthernorthupHoweSoundbeyondPorteauCoveis Furry Creek Golf and Country
Club (604/922-9461 or 888/922-9462), generally regarded as the most scenic course in
the Vancouver region. Immaculately manicured, the course is bordered on one side by the
driftwood-strewn beaches of Howe Sound and on the other by towering mountains. It is
relatively short, at just over 6,000 yards, but water comes into play on many holes, includ-
ingonewherethegreenjutsintothesoundandisalmostanisland.Insummer,greensfees
are $99, with the price of a round decreasing to as low as $59 the rest of the year. Twilight
ratesreducethecostsfurther.Allratesincludevaletparking,alocker,powercart,tees,and
a towel.
Of the many golf courses spread out along the Fraser River Valley, Meadow Gardens
