notes the many explorers who contributed to opening up Vancouver to European settle-
ment.Fromthisloftyviewpoint, theviewextendsacrosstheStrait ofGeorgia.Thistrail is
2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) one-way; allow two hours for the round-trip. In the same vicin-
ity as the Imperial trailhead, at the west end of 19th Avenue, a short boardwalk trail leads
to Camosun Bog, home to a great variety of plants and birds.
Inthenorthofthepark,northofChancellorBoulevard,trailsleadthroughdeepravines
andacrossMarineDrivetoArcadiaandSpanishBanksBeaches.Walkalongthesebeaches
andthenupanyravine,acrossMarineDrive,andalongAdmiralTrail,followingthebluffs
for a circuit that can be as short or as long as you wish.
For the more ambitious, it is possible to use the trails of Pacific Spirit Park and around
Point Grey to circumnavigate the UBC campus; it's 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) round-trip
(allow 4-5 hours).
BICYCLING
StanleyParkisameccaforcyclists;amongitsnetworkofbikepathsisthepopularSeawall
Promenade, whichhugsthecoastfor10kilometers (6.2miles). Biketravel isinacounter-
clockwise direction. On the south side of English Bay, a cycle path runs from Vanier Park
to Point Grey and the university, passing some of the city's best beaches on the way. On
the north side of Burrard Inlet, hard-core mountain bike enthusiasts tackle the rough trails
of Cypress Provincial Park and Grouse Mountain.
THE REMARKABLE TERRY FOX
Vancouver-bornTerryFoxisamanwhosenameissuretocomeupatsomepointon
your Canadian travels. In 1977, as a college-bound teenager, Fox lost his right leg
to cancer. On April 12, 1980, after three years of training, with next to no sponsor-
ship and little media coverage, he set off from Newfoundland on his Marathon of
Hope, with the aim of raising money for cancer research. After running more than
5,000kilometers(3,100miles)in144days,arecurrenceofthecancerforcedhimto
stop just outside Ontario's Thunder Bay. Cancer had begun spreading to his lungs,
andonJune28,1981,agedjust22,hedied.Ashisrunhadprogressed,theattention
had grown and, more important, the donations poured in. In total, his Marathon of
Hope raised $24 million, far surpassing all goals.
