Nitobe Memorial Garden
Just south of the Museum of Anthropology is the serene Nitobe Memorial Garden (604/

or$4.50,child$3),namedforanddedicatedtoaprominentJapaneseeducator.Spreadover
1 hectare (2.5 acres), this traditional Japanese garden of shrubs and miniatures has two
distinct sections: the Stroll Garden, laid out in a form that symbolizes the journey through
life, and the Tea Garden, the place to contemplate life from a ceremonial teahouse. The
garden is surrounded by high walls (which almost block out the noise of traffic from busy
Marine Drive),makingitapeaceful retreat. Outside ofsummer,thegardenisopenlimited
hours (10am-2:30pm Mon.-Fri.), but admission is by donation.
UBC Botanical Garden
Also on campus is the delightful UBC Botanical Garden (6804 Marine Dr., 604/
822-9666, www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca , mid-March to mid-Oct. 9am-4:30pm Mon.-Fri.,
9:30am-4:30pm Sat.-Sun., adult $20, senior $15, child $10). Set amid coastal forest, the
44-hectare (110-acre) garden dates to the turn of the 20th century and features eight sep-
arate sections, which hold about 10,000 species of trees, shrubs, and flowers. The vari-
ousgardenshavethemesofspecificregionsorenvironments.HighlightsincludeCanada's
largest collection of rhododendrons in the Asian Garden; a BC Native Garden alive with
theplants,flowers,andshrubsfoundalongthePacificNorthwestcoast;adisplayofmoun-
tain plants from the world's continents in the Alpine Garden; medieval healing plants in
thePhysickGarden;andaninterestingplantingoffruitandvegetablesintheFoodGarden.
From the Museum of Anthropology, follow Marine Drive south for 2.4 kilometers (1.5
miles) to 16th Avenue.
BC Golf Museum
On the east side of campus is the BC Golf Museum (2545 Blanca St. at 10th Ave. W.,
www.bcgolfhouse.com , 604/222-4653, noon-4pm Tues.-Sun., donation), housed in a Brit-
ish India bungalow-style building that was originally the University Golf Course club-
house. The clubhouse became obsolete when the order of holes changed, but if there's a
waitonthe17thtee,youcouldduckyourheadinthedoor.Themuseumholdsacollection
of British Columbia golfing memorabilia, a collection of historical golfing equipment, ex-
tensive archives, and a library of golfing books.
