In-Depth Information
South of downtown, two hotels overlook Port Hardy's busy harbor from the marina.
Glen Lyon Inn (6435 Hardy Bay Rd., 250/949-7115 or 877/949-7115,
www.glenlyoninn.com , $110-135 s, $110-145 d) has 44 rooms in two wings. Facilities in-
clude a laundry and a small restaurant. The adjacent M Quarterdeck Inn (6555 Hardy
Bay Rd., 250/902-0455 or 877/902-0459, www.quarterdeckresort.net , from $135 s or d)
offers larger, more modern rooms, many with harbor views. Facilities include a fitness
room, sauna, and a laundry room. Relative to the other town motels, this place is a good
value.
Both of Port Hardy's commercial campgrounds are south of town, halfway around
Hardy Bay to the ferry terminal. The pick of the two is Quatse River Campground
(8400 Byng Rd., 250/949-2395 or 866/949-2395, www.quatsecampground.com , $24-29),
which is adjacent to the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre. Sites are shaded by a lush
old-growth forest, and you can fish in the river right off the camping area—then move
over to the communal fire pit and recall stories of the one that got away. In the vicinity
is Port Hardy RV Resort (8080 Goodspeed Rd., 250/949-8111 or 855/949-8118,
www.porthardyrvresort.com , $25-37), also on the Quatse River. Facilities include a barbe-
cue shelter, modern bathrooms, firewood and fire rings, and a small store.
Food
Port Hardy doesn't offer a large variety of dining options. Wander around town and you'll
soon see what there is. Café Guido (7135 Market St., 250/949-9808, 7am-6pm Mon.-Fri.,
8am-6pm Sat., 5am-5pm Sun., lunches $6.50-9.50) pours the best coffee this far north,
with the exotically filled toasted sandwiches the best option for food. Downstairs is a
bookstore. At Captain Hardy's (7145 Market St., 250/949-7133, 7am-7pm daily, $7-11),
the advertised breakfast specials are small and come on plastic plates, but cost only about
$5. The rest of the day, this place offers good fish and chips from $7.
Dine at the Quarterdeck Pub (Quarterdeck Inn, 6555 Hardy Bay Rd., 250/902-0455,
daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, $11-22), south of downtown in the lodging of the
same name, for the opportunity to see bald eagles feeding right outside the window. The
menu is fairly standard but well priced, with many seafood choices including a huge bowl
of seafood chowder for $8.50.
