About the only thing they have in common is the incredible setting. Overlooking the
cove, Wastell Manor has been restored, with the four well-furnished guest rooms priced
$165-195 single or double. Finally, a short walk from the village is a campground with
wooded sites as well as showers, a laundromat, boat launch, and store. Sites are $28-33.
MALCOLM ISLAND
This largish island, immediately offshore from Port McNeill, is home to around 800
people, most of whom live in the village of Sointula. The first European settlers were of
Finnish descent. They arrived around 1900, after migrating across Canada in search of a
remote, peaceful place to call their own. Meaning “harmony” in Finnish, Sointula evolved
as a socialist community in which everyone shared everything. To some extent, these uto-
pian ideals continue to this day, with descendants of the original settlers operating a fleet
of fishing boats and the general store as cooperatives. In town, wander along the residen-
tial streets and admire the trim homes and well-tended gardens; then walk the 3-kilometer
(1.9-mile) Mateoja Trail from the end of 3rd Street to a popular bird-watching spot, Big
Lake.
