HIGHWAY 28
Running from the east coast to the west coast through the northern section of magnificent
Strathcona Provincial Park, Highway 28 is another island road worth traveling for the
scenery alone. The first place to stop is 1,087-hectare (2,690-acre) Elk Falls Provincial
Park, 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) west of Campbell River. Here you can follow beautiful
forest trails to waterfalls, go swimming and fishing, and stay the night (Apr.-Oct.) in a
wooded campsite ($17 per night, no showers). Not far beyond the park, the highway par-
allels Upper Campbell Lake for 20 kilometers (12 miles) before splitting, with the main
highway continuing west to Gold River and a side road following the east shore of Buttle
Lake into Strathcona Provincial Park.
