Fishing
Salmon fishing is the point of visiting Campbell River for many visitors. The best thing
about angling in local waters is that it can be enjoyed by all ages and on all budgets —
and without a long boat ride through rough waters to reach the best spots. Regardless of
whether you're a first-timer or an old-timer, Discovery Pier in downtown Campbell River
is a fantastic place to fish for salmon. The pier sports built-in rod holders, fish-cleaning
stations, glassed-in shelters for nonanglers, and colorful signs describing the fish you're
likely to catch. Anglers cast for salmon, bottomfish, and the occasional steelhead, hauling
them up in nets on long ropes. When the salmon are running, the pier gets extremely busy,
and for a reason — Chinook salmon over 14 kilograms (30 pounds) are not uncommon.
Rod rentals are available on the pier ($5 per hour, $13 per half day, $23 per day). Don't
forget, you also need a fishing license.
