Port Alberni waterfront
Della Falls
In the remote southern section of Strathcona Provincial Park, difficult-to-reach Della
Falls is accessible only from Port Alberni. The 440-meter (1,440-foot) waterfall northwest
of town is one of the highest in North America, and getting to it requires a lot of effort:
first by boat or canoe along Great Central Lake, then by a rough 16-kilometer (10-mile)
hike (eight hours each way) up the Drinkwater Creek watershed.
Fishing
Along with at least one other Vancouver Island town, Port Alberni claims to be the “Sal-
mon Capital of the World.” The fishing in Alberni Inlet is certainly world-class, but prob-
ably no better than a handful of other places on the island. The main salmon runs occur
in fall, when hundreds of thousands of salmon migrate up Alberni Inlet to their spawning
grounds.
