The town of Chemainus (pop. 3,600) bills itself as “The Little Town That Did.” Did what,
you ask? Well, Chemainus has always been a sleepy little mill town; its first sawmill dates
backto1862.In1982MacMillanBloedelshutdownthetown'santiquatedmill,whichem-
ployed400people,replacingitayearlaterwithamodernmillemployingonly155people.
Chemainiacs did not want their town to die. Needing tourists, they hired local artists to
