Hiking Conditions
The trail can be hiked in either direction, so take your choice. The first two days out from
Gordon River traverse difficult terrain, meaning more enjoyable hiking for the remaining
days. The first two days out from Pachena Bay are relatively easy, meaning a lighter pack
for the more difficult section.
Hikers must be totally self-sufficient, because no facilities exist along the route. Go
with at least two other people, and travel as light as possible. Wear comfortable hiking
boots, and take a stove, at least 15 meters (50 feet) of strong light rope, head-to-toe wa-
terproof gear (keep your spare clothes and sleeping bag in a plastic bag), a small amount
of fire starter for an emergency, sunscreen, insect repellent, a first-aid kit (for cuts, burns,
sprains, and blisters), and waterproof matches. Rainfall is least likely in the summer; July
is generally the driest month, but be prepared for rain, strong winds, thick fog, and muddy
trail conditions even then.
Along the trail are two river crossings that are made via ferry. One is at Gordon River
outside of Port Renfrew. The other, midway along the trail, crosses Nitinat Narrows, the

son. The ferry fees ($15 each) are collected on behalf of private operators in conjunction
with the trail permit. When there is no ferry service (Oct.-Apr.), the West Coast Trail is
closed.
Permits
The West Coast Trail is open May through September, with a quota system in effect
between mid-June and mid-September. During this period, only 52 hikers per day are is-
sued permits to start down the trail (26 from each end). Reservations for 40 of the 50
slots are accepted starting mid-April (250/726-4453 or 877/737-3783, 9am-5pm Mon.-
Sat.). The nonrefundable reservation fee is $25 per person, which includes a waterproof
trail map. The remaining 10 spots per day are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis
