tends for over 1 kilometer (0.6 mile). Take Whiffen Spit Road (through town to the west)
to reach the spit. It's a 20-minute walk to the end, and along the way you may spot seals
and otters on the shoreline.
Sooke Region Museum (2070 Phillips Rd., 250/642-6351, 9am-5pm daily, donation)
lies just beyond Sooke River Bridge. When you've finished admiring the historical arti-
facts, relax on the grassy area in front or wander around the back to count all 478 growth
rings on the cross-section of a giant spruce tree. The museum is also home to Sooke Visit-
or Centre.
Across the harbor is East Sooke Regional Park, protecting 1,422 hectares (3,512
acres) of coastal forest and rocky shoreline. It holds around 50 kilometers (31 miles) of
trails leading along sea cliffs, to the open meadows of an abandoned apple orchard and to
lofty lookouts. Pick up a map from the visitors center to help find your way around the
park. The main access is Gillespie Road, which branches south off Highway 14 on the
east side of Sooke. Down Gillespie Road 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) is a pullout on the left.
