ITALIAN
One of the most popular restaurants in down Victoria is Pagliacci's (1011 Broad St., 250/
386-1662, 11:30am-3pm and 5:30pm-10pm daily, $14-29), known for hearty Italian food,
homemade bread, great desserts, and loads of atmosphere. Small and always busy, the res-
taurant attracts a lively local crowd, many with children; you'll inevitably have to wait
for a table during the busiest times (no reservations taken). Pasta options include a prawn
fettuccine topped with tomato mint sauce.
The setting of Il Terrazzo (Waddington Alley, 250/361-0028, 11am-3pm Mon.-Fri.,
5pm-10pm daily, $15-36), in a red brick building in the historical Old Town precinct, is
perfect for this traditional northern Italian dining room. The pasta is made in-house, and
when combined with local seafood (think halibut baked with a peppercorn and blackberry
glace settled on a bed of three-chees fusilli pasta) the combination is divine.
In Oak Bay, Ottavio Italian Bakery (2272 Oak Bay Ave., 250/592-4080, 8am-6pm
Tues.-Sat.) has been operated by three generations of the same Italian family. The hand-
rolled breads are baked daily, the very best imported oils and spices are reasonably priced,
and the gelato is as good as anywhere in the city. At lunch, enjoy an antipasto platter or
grilled Panini on a rosemary and olive oil focaccia.
VEGETARIAN
M Rebar (50 Bastion Sq., 250/361-9223, 8:30am-9pm Mon.-Sat., 8:30am-3:30pm Sun.,
$8.50-17) is a cheerful, always-busy 1970s-style vegetarian restaurant with a loyal local
following. Dishes such as the almond burger at lunch and Thai tiger prawn curry at dinner
are full of flavor and made with only the freshest ingredients. Still hungry? Try the nutty
carrot cake. Children are catered to with fun choices such as banana and peanut butter
on sunflower seed bread. It's worth stopping by just for juice: vegetable and fruit juices,
power tonics, and wheatgrass infusions are made to order for $6.50.
