Down the hill a little and up a flight of stairs is Don Mee Restaurant (538 Fisgard St.,
250/383-1032, lunch Mon.-Fri., dinner daily, $11-23), specializing in the cuisine of Can-
ton. Although there is an emphasis on seafood, the Peking duck, served over two courses,
is a highlight. Four course dinners for two or more diners are a good deal at under $20 per
person.
A few blocks from Chinatown and just off Douglas Street is Lotus Pond (617 Johnson
St., 250/380-9293, 11am-3pm and 5pm-9pm Tues.-Sun., $6.50-12), a no-frills vegetarian
Chinese restaurant.

Noodle Box (626 Fisgard St., 250/360-1312, 11am-9pm Mon.-Fri., noon-9pm Sat.-Sun.,
$8.50-14) started out as a street stall and now has multiple locations, including along Fis-
gardStreetneartheentrancetoChinatown.Theconceptissimple—aninexpensivenoodle
bar, serving up fare similar to what you'd find on the streets of Southeast Asia.

One of the best Thai restaurants in the city is Sookjai Thai (893 Fort St., 250/383-9945,
11:30am-9:30pm Mon.-Thurs., 11:30am-1:30pm Fri.-Sat., $11-19). The tranquil setting
is the perfect place to sample traditional delights such as tom yum goong (a prawn and
mushroom soup with a hint of tangy citrus), and baked red snapper sprinkled with spices
sourcedfromThailand.Thesnapperisthemostexpensivemain,withseveralinspiringve-
getarian choices around $10.
