in the heart of the downtown tourist precinct, sells teas from around the world as
well as tea paraphernalia such as teapots, gift sets, and collector tins. The adjacent
café pours teas from all over the globe in a North American-style coffeehouse.
BAKERIES
In Old Town, Willies Bakery (537 Johnson St., 250/381-8414, 7am-4pm Mon.-Fri.,
8:30am-4pm Sat., 8am-4pm Sun., lunches $6.50-9.50) is an old-style café offering cakes,
pastries, and sodas, with a quiet cobbled courtyard in which to enjoy them.
On the same side of downtown, Cascadia Bakery (1812 Government St., 250/
380-6606, 7am-5pm Mon.-Fri., 8am-4pm Sat., 9am-3pm Sun., lunches $7-10) is best
known for its hand-shaped, preservative-free breads, but also offers freshly made granola
and tasty lunches.
Ignore the dated furnishings at the Dutch Bakery (718 Fort St., 250/383-9725,
7:30am-5pm Mon.-Sat.) and tuck into freshly baked goodies and handmade chocolates.
CAFÉS
Murchies is synonymous with tea in Victoria, but the adjacent Murchies Café (1110
Government St., 250/381-5451, 7:30am-6pm daily, lunches $8-10) is a large space with a
long deli-style glass cabinet filled with pre-made sandwiches and pastries. The café also
pours teas from around the world as well as coffee concoctions.
Broughton Street Deli (648 Broughton St., 250/380-9988, 7am-4pm Mon.-Fri.,
9am-3pm Sat., breakfast $10-13, lunches $6-9) occupies a tiny space at street level of a
historical red-brick building. Soups made from scratch daily are $5 and sandwiches just
$7.
Lady Marmalade (608 Johnson St., 250/381-2872, 8:30am-10pm 8am-4pm daily,
lunches $8.50-14) is a funky café with a delightful array of breakfast choices (think brie
and avocado eggs benedict) and healthy lunches, including an avocado, brie, and bacon
baguette.
With walls decorated with original art and an eclectic array of table arrangements,
Mo:Le (554PandoraSt.,250/385-6653,8am-3pmMon.-Fri.,8am-4pmSat.-Sun.,lunches
$10-15) impresses with creative yet well-priced cooking—think shrimp eggs benedict,
yam omelet, maple-balsam grilled vegetable sandwich, and more.
