phone, and Internet access. The park is 17 kilometers (10.6 miles) east of downtown. To
get there, take Exit 37 (Gaglardi) from the TransCanada Highway, turn right at the first
traffic light, take the first left and then the first right into Cariboo Place. The Production
Way SkyTrain station is an eight-minute walk from this campground.
COQUITLAM
Coquitlam (pop.127,000)isaresidential areanorthandeastofBurnaby.Itliesatthehead
of Burrard Inlet, near Port Moody, which was once slated as the terminus of the transcon-
tinentalrailway.There'snothingofrealinterestinCoquitlam,butLocoRoadleadsaround
Burrard Inlet to Belcarra Regional Park, which is lapped by the waters of Indian Arm.
Pinecone Burke Provincial Park
Declared a provincial park in the mid-1990s, Pinecone Burke protects 38,000 hectares
(94,000 acres) of the North Shore Range northeast of Coquitlam. It extends along the
west shoreline of Pitt Lake (opposite Golden Ears Provincial Park) and as far west as the
Boise Valley, scene of a short-lived gold rush in the late 1800s. Much of the park was
logged more than 100 years ago, but a few sections of old-growth forest remain, including
a1,000-year-oldstandofcedarintheCedarSpiritGrove.TogettotheparkfromHighway
7, take Coast Meridian Road north to Harper Road, which leads to Munro and Dennett
Lakes.
NEW WESTMINSTER
“New West,” as it's best known, is a densely populated residential area 15 kilometers
(9.3 miles) southeast of downtown. Its strategic location, where the Fraser River divides,
caused it to become a hub of river transportation and a thriving economic center. It was
declared the capital of the mainland colony in 1859 and then the provincial capital in the
years 1866-1868. Only a few historical buildings remain, and the old port area has been
totally overtaken by modern developments. Although still a busy inland port, the north
sideoftheriver,alongColumbiaStreet,wasredevelopedinthelate1980s,withariverside
promenade linking attractive stretches of green space to the Westminster Quay develop-
ment and other modern shopping areas.
The easiest way to reach New West from downtown is by SkyTrain. By vehicle, take
the Kingsway out of the city. This stretch of road becomes 10th Avenue, winding around
the north side of New West's downtown commercial district before crossing the Fraser
