dominiums. At around 149th Street is the main concentration of restaurants, an inform-
ation center, and a long pier. Although the entire strip bustles with activity on summer
weekends, this section is super-busy. The city's namesake lies above the high-tide mark
just south of the pier. It is now painted bright white and impossible to miss. The beach is
no Caribbean gem, but at low tide, locals flock to the wide expanse of sand to bake in the
sun, wade in shallow water, play Frisbee, or skimboard across pools of water. If you see a
parking spot, take it, and go for a walk along the beach. You'll never believe you're in the
same city as mega-trendy Kitsilano Beach.
Camping
Dogwood Campground & RV Park (15151 112th Ave., Surrey, 604/583-5585 or 866/
496-9484, www.dogwoodcampgrounds.com , tents $30, hookups $44) is 35 kilometers (22
miles) from downtown. It's right beside the TransCanada Highway; to get there from
downtown, take Exit 48 and cross back over the highway, turning left onto 154th Street.
Eastboundtravelers(headingtowardthecity)shouldtakeExit50,turnnorthoverthehigh-
way, and follow 160th Street north to 112th Avenue. Turn left and follow this street to the
end. Facilities are adequate and modern, but basic, and include a pool, playground, and
laundry.
BURNABY
Immediatelyeastofdowntown,Burnabywasincorporatedasacityin1992(itspopulation
of 225,000 makes it British Columbia's third-largest city), but in reality it's part of Van-
couver's suburban sprawl. It extends east from Boundary Road to Coquitlam, while
Burrard Inlet lies to the north and riverside New Westminster to the southeast. The
TransCanada Highway bisects Burnaby, but access is easiest via the SkyTrain, which
makes four stops within the city. Among these stops is Metrotown, which is Vancouver's
largest shopping mall.
Burnaby Village Museum
The four-hectare (10-acre) open-air B urnaby Village Museum (6501 Deer Lake Ave.,
604/297-4565, 11am-4:30pm Tues.-Sun. May-early Sept., free) lies in Deer Lake Park, on
the south side of the TransCanada Highway; to get there take Exit 33 south, then turn left
onto Canada Way and right onto Deer Lake Avenue, or take the SkyTrain to Metrotown
Station and jump aboard bus 144. The village is a reconstruction of how a BC town would
have looked in the first 20 years of the 1900s, complete with more than 30 shops and
