era, five others in various states of disrepair, and a variety of interesting wooden ves-
sels. Another interesting Steveston attraction is Steveston Museum (3811 Moncton St.,
604/718-8439, 9:30am-5pm Mon.-Sat., noon-4pm, Sun., donation), in the old Royal Bank
building, which profiles local history through displays such as a reconstructed general
store. At the west end of Moncton Street is Garry Point Park, a windswept piece of land
jutting into the Strait of Georgia, with views extending to the Southern Gulf Islands.
Naturally, seafood is the specialty at harbor front restaurants, all with outdoor tables.
The most casual option is a take-out meal from Sockeye City Grill (Fisherman's Wharf,
BayviewSt.,604/275-6790);orderatthewindowandspreadoutyourfeastonthewharfor
dock. Sockeye City also has a long row of outdoor tables for eat-in guests, as does Shady
Island Seafood (Fisherman's Wharf, 3800 Bayview St., 604/275-6587). In both cases, a
steaming bowl of clam chowder followed by a grilled filet of salmon will set you back
around $30.
To get to Steveston, take Highway 99 to the Steveston Highway exit, then head west,
passing by a magnificent Buddhist temple. Town center is south from the Steveston High-
way along the No. 1 Road.
