Privately-owned backpacker lodges in Vancouver come and go with predictable regu-
larity. Many should be avoided. One exception is Samesun Vancouver (1018 Granville
St.,604/682-8226or877/972-6378, www.samesun.com ,$32dorm,$90-100sord),which
is excellent in all respects. Typical of city hostels the world over, rooms in this old four-
story building are small, but each has been tastefully decorated, and the communal lounge
and kitchen areas serve guests well. Other facilities include a separate TV room, and free
wireless Internet access, and a rooftop patio.
C&N Backpackers (927 Main St., 604/682-2441 or 888/434-6060,
www.cnnbackpackers.com , $25 dorm, $60 s or d) has undergone some improvements in
recent years, but conditions are still sparse. There's a sink in every dorm room and other
bathroom facilities on every floor. Other amenities include a laundry and public Internet
access. The location is central to Pacific Central Station, but the neighborhood is among
the worst in the city after dark.
$50-100
The three-story Kingston Hotel (757 Richards St., 604/684-9024 or 888/713-3304,
www.kingstonhotelvancouver.com , $80-125 s, $90-155 d) is over 100 years old and has
been extensively renovated. Most of the 55 rooms share bathrooms, but have their own
sink with running water. Amenities include a sauna, laundry, TV rental, and TV lounge
with a collection of old-time movies. The adjacent parking garage is handy if you have a
vehicle. Room rates include a light breakfast.
The location of the 1914 Budget Inn Patricia Hotel (403 E. Hastings St., 604/
255-4301, www.patriciahotel.ca , $70-125 s or d) isn't the best—it's separated from down-
town by infamous East Hastings Street—but the price is right, parking is free, and down-
stairs is a popular pub with in-house brewery and decent food. Rooms are available in a
varietyofconfigurations;thesmallestroomssharebathrooms,butlargerroomscomewith
