In-Depth Information
Because photographic images are so readily perceived as depictions of reality, the de-
signer has incredible leeway in manipulating them without sacrificing believability.
Despite the surreal situation depicted in the top image (A), for example, viewers will
find it easy to accept the scene as credible. Further, this automatic assumption about
the veracity of a photograph permits designers to evoke sensory experiences through
their manipulation. Presenting a graphically exaggerated photograph of an object, as
seen in the lower example (B), trades on its believability and the corrollary common
understanding of its function to create an immediately recognizable aural experience.
