In this study, the same subject is presented in varying degrees of realism and stylization. Toward
the realistic end of the spectrum, the subject's literal meaning takes on more importance; as it be-
comes more stylized, its literal meaning becomes less important, while the gesture, the quality of
the marks, and associations or symbolic messaging that these impart become more important.
