The urban soundscape is “overshadowed by continuous mechanical noise” (Yang
and Kang 2005 ), where the quality of the urban soundscape represents an important
component of human well-being.
Sound perception varies according to different urban open spaces because social,
demographic, and behavioral factors (including age, gender, occupation, education,
and residential status) have an important effect on sound level evaluation (Yu and
Kang 2008 ). During these last years people are surrounded by a growing presence
of unwanted sound (noise), especially in urban areas and along infrastructures such
as railways, highways, airports, and ports. The sound quality becomes more a
