Figure 10.19 Preparation of 2D polymer composition and film thickness gradients:
(A) a composition gradient column through altering the bulk mono-
mer concentration whilst simultaneously loading a syringe; (B) de-
position of a 'stripe' of the varying polymer composition; (C and D)
flow coating where the substrate is moved beneath a knife blade and
liquid is spread across a substrate. Accelerating the substrate move-
ment during this process leads to a thickness gradient; (E) tempera-
ture stage with increasing temperature. 101,148

Figure 10.20 Fibroblast cell response to groove pitch and amine density (topogra-
phy-chemistry) 2D gradient after 1, 2 and 3 days culture. Heat maps
show % cell coverage with amine density (represented as contact
angle) on the x-axis and groove width on the y-axis. A 'hot spot' was
observed after 3 days culture, and the surface chemistry was found to
more strongly influence cell attachment and proliferation than the
topography.
