Future of Cocoa Production
By 2020, chocolate manufacturers will need an estimated 5 Mt of dried bean per an-
num, an additional one million tonnes of cocoa every year. There is immense need
for increased production. Cocoa is likely to remain a predominately smallholder
crop, with a proportion of the 5-6 million current smallholder embracing profes-
sional management and high inputs, resulting in increased productivity and income.
Plantations will remain an important production option, becoming more sophisti-
cated and embracing technical solutions to boost productivity and efficiency.
