Gorge Rim Trail
Just outside the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center is the Gorge Rim Trail (716/278-0820,
www.niagarafallsstatepark.com , dawn-dusk daily, free) trailhead. The Gorge Rim Trail is
an easy hike that stretches from the state park to the Robert Moses Power Plant, a one-way
distance of 6.2 miles. This multipurpose trail goes along the top of the gorge and is mostly
paved.Asyouproceednorth,thereareexcellentviewsofCanada,therapids,andthewhirl-
pool. Rest stops have interpretive signs describing the industrial heritage of the area. This
trail feeds into others that descend into the gorge for views of the rapids and whirlpool.
A kiosk at the trailhead has good informational posters and brochures about the entire 15
miles of trails that travel from the falls north toward Lake Ontario.
Bike Rental
Bike rental shops in the Niagara Falls region cater to locals and visitors pursuing the pleas-
ures and health benefits of cycling. There are two excellent options in Niagara Falls, al-
though both rent bikes June-September only. The Red Lounge Hostel (723 3rd St., 716/
286-0707, www.redloungeniagara.com , 7am-7pm daily June-Sept.) rents bikes for $10 an
hour and offers a unique, bicyclist-only guided tour ($15).
Ride Niagara Bicycle Rentals (Old Falls St. and Rainbow Blvd., 716/278-2121,
www.fallsstreet.com , 10am-6pm Tues.-Sat., noon-5pm Sun. June-Sept.) equips you with
everything needed for a two-wheel adventure, including helmets and bike locks. Also in-
cluded are maps with bicycle-friendly routes to explore. Rentals start at $15 for a half-day.
Accommodations
Niagara Falls hotels are found in two geographic regions—downtown and Niagara Falls
Boulevard. Downtown properties are typically more expensive, as they are within walking
distance of the state park. Niagara Falls Boulevard hotels are less expensive, but they are
older and require a five-mile drive to the falls. Hotels earn most of their revenue during
summer,sodon'texpectanybargainsthen.Inwinterandearlyspring,somehotelsarewill-
ing to negotiate rates. Rates listed here reflect high season costs.
